This year has seen many of the challenges we have faced in the last few years' continue. Our area is on the way up though and it is encouraging to see an increase in footfall on the Levenshulme High Street.
In 2017, we welcomed the Jandol Backlava Restaurant / Sweet Centre at 861, Stockport Road. I am sure you will agree with me that they are an excellent addition and will be an asset to our offer here in Levenshulme.
We also welcomed 3 new Barber Shops, 2 new nail and beauty shops, the Meating Room, new Estate Agent Ryan Baker, the Kumon Children's Learning Centre, David Norman Solicitors, Italian Junction on Albert Road and finally a re-brand of Bridgettes the Florist - becoming Moss and Maple and making the move from Albert Road to Stockport Road.
I would like to personally thank you for your contribution to our area. Many longstanding traders will know of the difficulties we have faced in Levenshulme with the high number of empty and derelict shops. I am pleased that we have turned a corner and empty premises are at their lowest for many years.
2018 is set to be the best yet. We look forward to the opening of 'Station Hop' on Stockport Road. I am sure it will be a boost to our evening economy.
As traders, it is important that we retain the character of our High Street. That's why it was so important to work together to maintain our historic veranda. We are also keeping a keen eye on the future of the old Natwest Bank and Royal Bank of Scotland, the old Royal Mail Sorting Office, Johnson's the Butchers and other shops in Levenshulme.
Levenshulme Market goes from strength to strength. Offering more than a shopping experience. Our market now has live entertainment, music and is a great meeting point for lots of people; ensuring that our area enjoys a boost in visitors.
A big thank you to Levenshulme Traders and local partners whose contribution greatly helped to make the 2017 Levenshulme Christmas Tree Switch on such a success. Although very cold indeed the evening remained dry and the crowds of families attending were as big as ever.
As usual Fr Christmas arrived promptly on the 192 Stagecoach bus ready to ensure each child received a special present from local traders. Meanwhile the crowds were entertained by the Tom Cliffe School of Dance, Seanie MC, Peppa Pig & Jamie the Elf. Local team mascots from Man United (Fred the Red)and Man City (Moonchester/Moonbeam) were very well received by the crowds and they were joined by the mascot of local sponsor Intime Taxis, Levenshulme.
The Levenshulme Christmas Tree Lights were officially switched on by The Lord Mayor of Manchester, Cllr. Eddie Newman, who was joined by local Councillors for Levenshulme & Gorton South and Manchester Gorton MP Afzal Khan. The Organising Team had made a fantastic job as always.
A special tribute with very loud cheers was given for Chair of Levenshulme Traders , Lawrence Hennigan, who is usually centre stage and is a key member of the team organising the event but was unable to be there this year.
All in all another great success for Levenshulme and a good time was had by all. Thanks again to all while we begin to plan the 2018 extravaganza.
A Happy and Prosperous New Year to you
